Empowering Migrant Women in Uganda - saying NO to inequalities and poverty vulnerability.
The overall goal of this project is to contribute to poverty eradication through women’s empowerment and the promotion of gender equality. This goal is coherent with the Millennium Development Goals as well as the forthcoming Sustainable Development Goals that strive to eradicate poverty in all it’s forms, achieve gender equality and empowerment of women and girls, ensure access to clean water and provide quality education and life-long learning.
The project will focus on supporting the Women’s Collective at HOCW in the development of their mushroom growing initiative. Graduates from business classes at HOCW created the idea for a business of growing and selling mushrooms. The pilot project was funded by a grant from the Finnish Refugee Council as well as by the HOCW women’s savings group. The women have successfully been growing and marketing their mushrooms and are now looking for an opportunity to expand their business.
This grant will be used to support the Women’s Collective by providing the capital needed to expand their business, increasing the economic independence of women, especially refugees, as they become able to financially support their families by growing and selling mushrooms. It will also be used to promote lifelong learning through workshops that develop financial literacy, respect for women’s rights and gender equality within the community.
The project duration 1ST JUNE 2015 – 30TH SEPTEMBER 2017
